The Genetic Programming method used in this 2005 publication differs from the advanced approaches Howard Science now applies to drone manoeuvre autonomy and certification. At the time, our director was exploring the concept of evolving the evaluation instruction for manoeuvres. We now employ enhanced methods that ensure full explainability. This paper is offered as a proof of concept for the foundational ideas. This original research was completed in 2000 and included both a 2D and a 3D proportional navigation implementation. The 2005 open literature publication is the above summary of the work involving the 2D pursuit and evade scenarios, The PN 3D simulation of the missile was a legacy item of Fortran programming at the then agency and hence it was difficult at that time to obtain the required permission to publish that research in the open literature. The 2D simulation of PN was quickly put together by the author. Although this research was fully conducted while our director was at DERA/QinetiQ by the capability that he pioneered and led, it was published under an academic partner’s affiliation (at that time a multi-institutional group advancing GP). This reflected a strategic practice to raise the visibility of certain applied research methods with the aim of fostering their popularity within academic and institutional circles.
